Description
This unit is the 3rd iteration of our best selling range of RS232 to DMX converters. This updated version features our built-in FadeEngine allowing even the simplest controllers to trigger smooth crossfades.
We have also removed the need for handshaking pins from the control system, so this unit can work easily with control systems that do not support handshaking control on the comms port.
Built in Preset storage allows the creation of 8 scenes with the ability to crossfade between recalled scenes for the ultimate in professional transitions.
An robust internal power supply allows any 9-28v DC power supply to be used.
A simple 3 wire serial interface with easy to use and fully documented protocol allows the unit to be driven by everything from simple one way AV control systems right up to high end control and PC based systems.
It produces a full 512 channel DMX-512A packet with 512 controllable channels. Up to 8 presets can be stored internally to the unit and these can be recalled to fade to the stored level over up to 25.5 seconds.
The unit is available with a wall mounting flange or a plain box version that can easily be velcroed to a rack piece or the underside of a desk due to its light weight.
Power Input is 9-28v DC on a 2 pin 5.08mm Phoenix connector. A matching screw connector is supplied.
RS232 Input is on a Female DB9 with pins 2, 3 and 5 connected. 9600 baud 8N1.
DMX Output is on an industry standard 5 pin XLR Connector.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my serial number so low?
Our Serial Numbers hold more than just a incrementing number of how many boxes we have made since we started. The Serial format is YYMMPBBB, where YY is a 2 digit year number, MM is a 2 digit Month number, P is the product code (9 for the RS3DMX-G2 unit), and BBB is the device build number for that time period starting at 001. We batch build so you may see a low number, but that doesn’t mean its the first one we have ever made!
Programming DMX On and Off
The DMX output can be enabled and disabled using the commands ‘DMX1’ for DMX output on, and ‘DMX0’ for DMX Output Off. This allows you to use them together with a preset recall message to make sure the channels are at the correct values before the DMX output is enabled.
When the output is disabled there will be no traffic on the DMX line. This can be used with some lighting fixtures to put them into a Stand Alone or Sound-to-light mode.
These commands do not survive a Power Cycle – DMX will always be enabled on a reboot, but can be disabled on Boot using the Power Up Mode command (below)
Setting DMX power up mode
The unit can be set to have the DMX output turned off at Power Up. This may be useful if you do not wish devices to snap to zero levels on power up, or wish to recall a preset level before turning on the DMX outputs.
This is done with the ‘DMS0’ command for Off at Start, and the ‘DMS1’ command to enable DMX at startup.
This command is written to internal memory so will survive a power cycle.
